Bens Leo: Physical Albums are Very Important

Despite the flourishing digital music business, musicians should not abandon physical albums, music observer Bens Leo believes.

He said album CDs and vinyl demonstrated a musician’s presence in the industry and showcased the participation of all people who were involved in the production — from the producer to the album cover designer.

“Physical albums are very important as they provide space for artists who supported the recording. It gives credit to the sound engineers, musicians, producers, album cover designers even down to the details such as hair and costume stylists,” he said.

Bens said physical albums were also still a requirement for musicians to obtain royalties for their work.

“They only need to release 500 units [of CDs]. That should not be a problem,” he said, adding that CDs and vinyl were also sought after by collectors and loyal fans.
